LED Vs. CFL Lighting

Lighting plays a crucial role in photography. The quality of the output is a debatable issue while comparing LEDs to CFLs. However, when you do a scientific analysis of the factors such as appearance, power usage, price, heat output, breakage ratio etc., LEDs appear better than CFLs in many ways. The light from the CFL looks diffuse and the light from the LED looks columnular. The LED is more of a spotlight. That’s the reason why we see more brightness and illumination using LED lighting.

As per the lighting experts, LEDs aren’t really bright enough to shoot still photographs with, unless you put them very close to your subject or you’re shooting inanimate subjects. However, they are great for video photography and can be transported easily without any breakage.

The energy consumption also is an important factor while making the comparison. So, investing $40 in replacing a CFL with LED will result in $35 of electricity savings and $5 in bulb savings in 16 years. LEDs are very stable in color temperature. The brightness can be varied with a built in rheostat with no change in white balance. The quality of the light is harsh, like the incandescent lights, so you might need to soften this light with diffusion material, or bounce it off a wall.

As per a research study by Howard M. Brandston and his “Save the Bulb campaign”:

  • CFL energy savings is insignificant and does not solve the global energy crisis;
  • CFLs presents serious health, environment and basic living concerns for the entire human race;
  • CFLs contain rare earth elements and have production and quality control issues;
  • Lighting alternatives such as halogens, LEDs, and high-performance incandescent lights are far more costly, forcing consumers back to using CFLs.

LED Lighting for Photography

LED lights have started a revolution in terms of the studio and video photography. LED lighting is a great way to save energy and is extensively used for sustainable lighting. Recently, the governmental agencies and statutory bodies have also put across some special measures to encourage the usage of LED lights. The utility of LEDs ranges from home lights to torch and further to outdoor traffic signals.

The LED lights for photography studios is a fairly new concept for those who are too much into using halogens or other light sources for photography. When the US energy department started a campaign for sustainable lighting and discouraged the usage CFLs for the safety and security of the environment, the popularity of LEDs took a momentum among the crowd. Most of the LED lights feature on-board controls which offer a full range of light levels, as well as control over the motorized focus to create a wide floodlight or a powerful spotlight. The light intensity and focus can be adjusted in several ways such as ballast control box with an integrated LED display, a wireless remote, or by connecting it to any DMX-compatible lighting control system.

LEDs are usually small, battery powered light banks that can be mounted directly on top of your video camera or DSLR. There are larger banks that mount onto light stands and plug into a wall outlet, but they are usually more expensive. LED lights typically provide you with a daylight balanced color temperature. Some of the pricier LED light banks have a variable light balance. Prices for an LED video light ranges anywhere from around $50 all the way up into the hundreds of dollars.

Available in different Daylight and Tungsten color temperatures, the LED lights feature accurate flicker-free light, low power draw, simple cool-to-the-touch operation, and controlled power and focus. A separate ballast unit and an adjustable yoke mounts on either a floor stand or hangs from a lighting grid for many mounting options.

Photographers and videographers often shoot under hot lights in order to get the powerful light they need, creating uncomfortable working conditions for the subject they shoot or people surrounding the photo-shoot. LED lighting gives users a cool option that still emits powerful light. LED lights provide even more control for professionals to get the exact effect wanted.

Bring Out The Best Out Of Your Chromakey Photography

Chroma keying or Chroma key compositing is a photography technique that allows a photographer to replace the solid color of the background with a background of their choice. This technique has been in use in cinematography for a long time and extensively adopted by other professional photographers for commercial photography. Using a chroma key green or blue screen, one can take amazing pictures, which is not possible using a traditional backdrop. Also, the photographers do not have to spend too much on expensive premium backdrops. If you are a professional photographer and using a green screen very frequently, you should go for a high quality backdrop.

The reason of using a green or blue screen is that these are the two colors which are not present in human skin and a clear contrast can be made between the subject and the background. By using any chromakey software like Photoshop, the background can be separated easily from the subject. Green screen photography simplifies this process and you can play around with the background with some awesome digital backdrops.

Lighting in chroma key photography plays an important role. You need to place a uniform lighting across the green screen to separate it easily from the subject post-production. To create an optimal lighting condition, you need to use professional lighting equipment. However, many photographers have used chroma key technique without the use of very top-notch lighting kits. Sometimes, it might take a longer time to process such images in post-production software.

To create an optimal lighting condition, it requires two side-lights pointing the screen from approximately a 45° angle. The lights should be placed about 6 feet away from the screen. Also, the subject should be at least 6 feet away from the screen. If the subject is more close to the screen, there will be more chances of getting “green spill” on the subject’s body parts.

So, mastering chromakey photography is easy. You don’t have to try hard learning the basics. Once you are clear with the basics, pick up a chroma key screen and start your practice with a simple software like Photoshop.

Solid Color Photography Backdrops – Get it right!

Photographers often face challenges in choosing the perfect background for their subjects. A backdrop enhances the look and feel of the subject by adding an extra edge to the photograph as a whole. So, the photographers need to be extra cautious in choosing the right backdrop to get everything right. Photographers are often advised not to use any background that might take the viewers’ attention away from the subject.

Here, through this post, we will share few ideas to select a solid color background for studio and outdoor photography shoots.

Solid color backdrops are one of the traditional and most common options available for today’s photographers. Selection of the color often depends on the theme and occasion.

The color depicts the story of the subject. The role of your backdrops is very crucial in bringing in contrast and clarity to your photographs. It depicts the mood and personality of the subject. You should ensure that you use a color that highlights the subject.

For example, solid red and white color backdrops are often used in romantic photography. Again, to depict a happy or angry mood of a face, black background could be an ideal choice. White backgrounds are mostly used in product photography to ensure best possible attention for the subject.

The lighting also plays a key role in creating a quality photograph. Keeping the intensity of the light correct to illuminate the subject is as important as choosing the right background color. (Find out more about lighting equipment)
